Coffee

From bean to cup

Coffee is a beloved beverage enjoyed all over the world, appreciated not only for its rich, robust flavour, but also for its ritual nature and its meaning as a symbol of social connection. Originating in East Africa, coffee has a long history intertwined with the culture and society of many nations.

The origins of coffee are lost between legend and historical truth, but one thing is certain: it has conquered the world with its distinctive character and versatility. While some prefer it for its energising effect, others appreciate its flavour nuances, the result of a long process that goes from cultivation to roasting, all the way to preparation.

Perhaps it was an Ethiopian shepherd, around 700 AD, who accidentally discovered the coffee plant. Or perhaps a monk, to whom these beans were given before being thrown into a fire. In any case, it was in Ethiopia that this plant and its beans were discovered. From there, coffee’s journey began: first moving towards the Red Sea, then reaching Yemen in the 15th century, arriving at the port of Mokha before spreading across Asia and Europe.

There are many ways to drink it and just as many ways to prepare it. From the intense and creamy espresso to modern extraction techniques, seemingly different paths come together, yet are in fact complementary. Among the most distinctive techniques is the Chemex, an elegant glass tool with an hourglass silhouette and a wooden collar. This instrument is specifically designed to offer an exceptional tasting experience, transforming extraction into a true ritual. By carefully dosing coffee and water, waiting becomes an integral part of the process, highlighting the importance of quality and celebrating the purity of aromas.

Marchesi 1824 and 1895 Coffee Designers by Lavazza enhance the essence of this ingredient through the unique experience of the “Coffee Ritual”. This experience, available exclusively in Marchesi 1824 pastry shops, offers a journey through different extraction techniques and the finest coffee varieties. This year, guests will be able to enjoy Alborada, a rare variety from Nicaragua, prepared with Chemex or moka. A high-quality Single Origin, it is perfect for celebrating the complexity of coffee aromas. This initiative celebrates the commitment and expertise that have long defined these two historic names, highlighting their dedication to promoting innovation while remaining faithful to the principles of quality and authenticity.
